false news can have a damaging effect on a business' reputation

False News and It’s Cost On Your Business’s Reputation

The Cost of False News On Your Business’s Reputation

In recent years, the dissemination of disinformation with an intent to deceive or mislead (i.e., false news) has become more prevalent, which is where public relations comes into play. It is usually associated with fabrications surrounding factual or relevant information trying to be framed as either much more positive or much more negative than the reality the truth would present. Should you have a sound public relations team to manage and potentially even crisis control such news, it will assist immensely with your business’s credibility.

While this issue is currently a hot topic, it’s been a problem in the business world for a long time. A bad news story can cause plummeting stock prices, destroy the reputation of a business, or cause unreasonable customer expectations. Unethical businesses can also generate false news or reviews in order to boost their own stature or profits, which is why your public relations team needs to make use of media management tools to decipher such news before it goes viral.

Over the last few years, the world has seen what feels like an explosion of false news, due to social media and technological advancements, enabling news to be spread and accessed in a whole new way with no limits. The different areas that false news is attempting to invade is limitless and it can potentially impact the social, political, and economic aspects of our world. As the frequency of false news continues to increase, it propels into the spotlight of public relevancy.

To better understand the impact of untrue news on company value, it is essential to understand the motives behind it, while also considering the importance of fighting back against false news and refuting misinformation. The way this false news is managed by your public relations team will have a huge impact on “riding the wave” as smoothly as possible, to negate the potential repercussions on your business.

Many social-media websites struggle to maximise user engagement, while minimising the amount of misinformation shared and reshared. The stakes are high for Facebook, Twitter, and their rivals, which generate most of their revenue from advertising. Viral content leads to higher user engagement, which in turn leads to more advertising revenue. But content-management algorithms designed to maximize user engagement may inadvertently promote content of dubious quality—including false news.

It is easy to see how false news is finding its way into news sources, which blur the lines of

the validity that we get from the news, and starts to make readers distrust and resent certain news outlets or news in general. Negative news often creates more interest than positive news does, which is why publications leverage off of this type of news, to increase readership.

False negative reviews and trending content pieces can, for instance, not only impact the reputation of a business, but also the organic ranking on search engines such as Google. However, many business owners are not aware that tools to disavow such links exist, and so suffer the negative consequences of false news.

False news is also related to many of the scams that can lead to instances of fraud. We have all experienced emails that masquerade as companies offering false refunds to online customers in order to capture their login information. This gives the company that they perceive to be, a bad name.

Overall, false news has many implications, as people are increasingly distrusting news sources and therefore battle to find information that is reliable and used to base important decisions on.

What makes you believe the news that you are reading? Which channels do you trust most? These are things that we need to take ask ourselves and take seriously, as the amount of fake news being spread around the world is unfathomable.

We can confirm that our premium offices are fully serviced and bring you flexible solutions to suit your business. Our rates are more affordable than you may think! We promise this isn’t false news. For more trustworthy news on topics related to business, click here.
