You may have heard the term ‘hybrid work’ being thrown around by your employer and fellow colleagues a lot lately, but what does it really mean? You may ask yourself. Well, the hybrid work model is one where employees get to choose to work either from the office or remotely. Since the Covid-19 pandemic started, working remotely was implemented by most companies as a precautionary measure in order to help flatten the curve of Covid-19 infections, and as per the Government’s recommendation.
Over time, working from home proved to not hinder business from carrying on as usual, and some employees seemed to thrive working from the comfort of their own homes, which boosted employee productivity.
As time went by, employees were given the alternative to come into their places of work again, and even though some had gotten comfortable with working remotely, others craved and missed human interaction. Microsoft released a report which states that over 70% of employees preferred to carry on working remotely and 65% preferred seeing their work teams in person. There’s also an odd percentage of people who preferred to have both options available.
Certain companies were left with no choice but to implementing the Hybrid Work Model, especially taking into consideration the unstable lockdown restrictions and the increased number of Covid-19 infections in South Africa.
Employees are now offered a flexible schedule around when they choose to come into in the office and when they choose to be working from home, as well as the times they are required to come in for important face to face meetings.
Although, the reality that has struck businesses because of this new way of working is that companies now have had to redesign their office layout to accommodate social distancing for when those few employees are in the office at a time. Some businesses have had to take it a step further and downsized on their office infrastructure and went for smaller office spaces or even opted for shared office spaces due to employees not coming into the premise all at the same time. This has helped with saving costs and ensuring that there’s enough funds allocated to implementing active Covid-19 precautionary measures. The advantage of renting a shared office space in the hybrid work model is that companies don’t have to deal with the burden of maintaining a building, while they get the benefit of having all the amenities that they need for their day-to-day business activities.
